A Little Bit About the Photo Above
On September 1, 2025, I was at Disney World with my wife and our 7-year-old granddaughter. I happened to be wearing a U.S. flag shirt and my U.S. Navy hat when a Disney official approached me and asked if I would volunteer to be the Veteran of the Day.
I was honored to participate in the Retreat Ceremony, helping to retire the colors and parade down Main Street, U.S.A. with the flag. Thousands of guests lined the street, clapping, cheering, and waving as the Color Guard passed by.
As I marched, I couldn’t hold back tears — seeing so many people stand, remove their hats, and show such deep respect for our flag was incredibly moving. It reminded me that Americans still love America.
Afterward, my granddaughter looked up at me and said, “Papa, thousands of people were clapping for you.”
I tried to explain that the crowd was showing respect for the flag. She thought for a moment and said, “No, Papa — they were clapping for you.”
Who was I to argue with a seven-year-old princess at Disney World?
If you’re a veteran, you’ve earned access to excellent healthcare through the VA or TRICARE. But did you know that you may also be eligible for additional Medicare Advantage benefits — including money back in your Social Security check every month?
Veterans Using the VA
Many veterans use VA facilities for their healthcare and prescriptions. In some cases, choosing the right Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan can give you a “giveback” benefit, which puts money directly back into your Social Security check each month.
That means you could save money while keeping access to your VA doctors, prescriptions, and benefits.
Veterans with TRICARE or TRICARE for Life
If you have TRICARE or TRICARE for Life, you may still be able to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan for added benefits such as:
Lower out-of-pocket costs for certain services
Dental, vision, and hearing coverage
Over-the-counter allowances
Gym memberships and transportation benefits
While this doesn’t work for every situation, many veterans have found that pairing a Medicare Advantage plan with their existing VA or TRICARE coverage enhances their benefits and saves money.
From One Veteran to Another
I’m also a veteran — I proudly served in the United States Navy as an Ocean Systems Analyst. Today, I personally use both Medicare and the VA for my healthcare, so I understand how the systems work together.
I’d be happy to share my experience and help you explore your options to see what might work best for you.
