Medicare Q&A

A: Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older, but it also covers certain younger people with disabilities and individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease.

A: Medicare has four parts:

  1. Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
  2. Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  3. Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) that offers additional benefits through private health plans.
  4. Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.

A: Individuals aged 65 or older, younger people with disabilities, and those with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant).

A: Enrollment can be done through the Social Security Administration either online, by phone, or in person. Most people are automatically enrolled in Part A and Part B when they turn 65 if they are already receiving Social Security benefits.

A: Starting in 2025, this plan allows Medicare Part D enrollees to pay out-of-pocket prescription drug costs through capped monthly payments instead of all at once, helping to spread out expenses over the year.
