Diabetes and Chronic Special Needs Plans

If you have Medicare, you can get more benefits at no extra cost to you. Medicare Advantage Plans are approved by Medicare and combine your doctor, hospital, and prescription drug coverages into one plan. Plus, you will get additional benefits. A lot of additional benefits.

If you have Medicare and Diabetes, there are Special Plans designed for your Medical and Prescription Drug needs.

Diabetic Chronic Special Needs Plans, were developed for people with either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes.

Did you know that according to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 10 Americans have Type 2 Diabetes?  That means more than 34 million Americans suffer from Diabetes.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Your pancreas produces a hormone called Insulin.  Insulin plays a role in allowing blood sugar into the cells in your body.  This is normal and necessary for energy.

When someone has Type 2 Diabetes, cells do not respond normally to insulin.  The pancreas makes more insulin to get cells to respond. At some point, the pancreas cannot keep up, and the body’s blood sugar rises.

High blood sugar is damaging to the body and can cause other serious health problems.  You will be your own main caregiver.  You will need to work out a schedule, with your doctor, to check your blood sugar by yourself.  This often means testing daily.

What Is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is sometimes still called Insulin-Dependent Diabetes.  It is less common that Type 2 Diabetes.  According to the CDC, only 5-10% of people with diabetes have Type 1 Diabetes.

If you have type 1 diabetes, you will need to take insulin injections or wear an insulin pump, to manage your blood sugar levels.  You must work with your doctor to figure out the most effective type and dosage of insulin for you.

I have a lot of customers who have diabetes.  Medicare Advantage Plans cover the cost of testing meters and supplies.  There are variables that decide what type of meter and how many testing strips will be covered.  I will work with you, within the parameters of your prescription, to get you the best meter and supplies for your needs.
